"This is a Ph.D. dissertation. Although quite a few researchers have pointed to the significance of the childhood theme in Tsvetaeva's work, no systematic analysis of her work has been done from this perspective. Nor have her childhood reminiscences been treated as a thematically consistent whole, but have rather been read as instances of the poet's prose in general. The present study examines Marina Tsvetaeva's memories of childhood in the context of her work and in the context of the cultural and political reality to which these reminiscences refer and in which they were written - i.e., Russia around the turn of the century and the Russian emigre world of 1930-1937. The study also touches upon the symbolic and allegorical dimension of the texts - Tsvetaeva's ""otherspeak"" in her prose. It is shown that the central scenes of these texts author's narrative of childhood also appears to have been a suitable medium for articulating controversial aesthetic statements and taking a stand for a historical past and literary tradition that at the time seemed doomed to oblivion."

"On April 12, 1926 Boris Pasternak wrote a letter of introduction for Marina Tsvetaeva to Rainer Maria Rilke, providing Rilke with Tsvetaeva's address in the Parisian suburb of Bellevue where she was then living in exile. Rilke responded on May 3 with a first letter to Tsvetaeva, covering autographed copies of his Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Oprpheus. Throughout that summer the three poets wrote to each other. In his fourth letter to Tsvetaeva, June 8, Rilke enclosed a poem he wrote that day for her. 'Elegie.' When Rilke died to Leukemia in December 29, 1926, Tsvetaeva learned of his death from Mark Slonim, who asked her to write a piece for the Russian emigre press. Marina Tsvetaeva is among the great European poets of the twentieth century. With Anna Akhmatova, Boris Pasternak and Osip Mandelstam, she retained her humanity and integrity through Russia's 'terrible years' of the Great Terror. Even in her long, tragic exile, her roots were in Russia and the great tradition of Russian poetry. Her voice lives in part because it remains alert to her past, and to cultures, especially French, where she spent her exile. When Elaine Feinstein first read Tsvetaeva's poems in the 1960s, they transformed her. Their intensity and honesty spoke to her directly. To her first translations, published to acclaim in 1971, she added in later years, not least the sequence 'Girlfriend', dedicated to her lover Sofia Parnok. Feinstein published Tsvetaeva's biography in 1987.

This study rehabilitates Tsvetaeva as a serious, innovative ethical thinker who developed an ethics for the poet that could dispense with universal value guarantees. For Tsvetaeva, ethical judgements had to be individual rather than universal, open to revision rather than permanent. Examining her ideational background, the study sheds new light on the pre-exile years, when Tsvetaeva suffered from a profound uncertainty about the moral nature and duty of the poet. It identifies the experience of exile as a catalyst for the development of her ethical thought that culminated in 'Iskusstvo pri svete sovesti'. Considering Tsvetaeva's application of her ethics in her life, this study reveals her emphasis on the personal to be the direct result of her ethical belief in individual judgements. Her conscious effort persistently to counteract dominant political ideologies similarly stems from her ethical suspicion of any kind of claim on universal truth. Finally the study assesses the significance of Tsvetaeva's suicide, revealing it to be the inevitable, terrifying consequence of her ethical self-definition, her commitment to individual freedom, and the pursuit of higher truths.
