The Man Who Was Afraid

Autor: Maksim Gorky

Número de Páginas: 382

INTRODUCTORY NOTE. OUT of the darkest depths of life, where vice and crime and misery abound, comes the Byron of the twentieth century, the poet of the vagabond and the proletariat, Maxim Gorky. Not like the beggar, humbly imploring for a crust in the name of the Lord, nor like the jeweller displaying his precious stones to dazzle and tempt the eye, he comes to the world,—nay, in accents of Tyrtaeus this commoner of Nizhni Novgorod spurs on his troops of freedom-loving heroes to conquer, as it were, the placid, self-satisfied literatures of to-day, and bring new life to pale, bloodless frames. Like Byron's impassioned utterances, "borne on the tones of a wild and quite artless melody," is Gorky's mad, unbridled, powerful voice, as he sings of the "madness of the brave," of the barefooted dreamers, who are proud of their idleness, who possess nothing and fear nothing, who are gay in their misery, though miserable in their joy. Gorky's voice is not the calm, cultivated, well-balanced voice of Chekhov, the Russian De Maupassant, nor even the apostolic, well-meaning, but comparatively faint voice of Tolstoy, the preacher: it is the roaring of a lion, the crash of thunder. In its...

Born "Aleksey Maksimovich Peshkov" on March 16, 1868, in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia -- later renamed in his honor - Maxim Gorky would learn early the harsh lessons of life. He spent his early childhood in Astrakhan where his father worked as a shipping agent, but when the boy was only five years old, his father died, and he was sent to live with his maternal grandparents. This was not a happy time for the young Gorky as conditions were poor and often violent. At the age of eight, the boy's grandfather forced him to quit school and apprenticed him to several tradesmen including a shoemaker and an icon painter. Fortunately, Gorky also worked as a dishwasher on a Volga steamer where a friendly cook taught him to read, and literature soon became his passion.

Culture and the People

Autor: Maxim Gorky

Número de Páginas: 228

This collection contains the last essays of Gorky which are related centrally to the theme stated in the title of this book culture and the people. It is a representative selection from the voluminous publicist efforts in which the author was engaged during the last ten years of his life. Together with his bookfull of articles, On Guard for the Soviet Union, the present volume reveals a side of Gorky's writing as necessary to an understanding of his work as his novels, stories, autobiographical volumes and plays. Some of the contributions are slashing polemics; many were written under the pressure of daily journalism, appearing in numerous periodicals, including the leading Soviet papers Pravda and Izvestia; all of them reflect the vigor and depth of Gorky's literary talent.

Maksim Gorky

Autor: Maksim Gorky

Número de Páginas: 391

It has been Gorky's great misfortune to be remembered mostly for the wrong things - for the composition of the novel Mother (held up by generations of Soviet critics as the model for Socialist Realist fiction): for his support of the Stalin regime: and for his direct involvemet in thefoundation of the Soviet Union of Writers. With the advent of glasnost and perestroika, and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet order itself, these conventional notions are at last becoming subject to a radical and necessary reappraisal in Gorky's native land.Yet, despite the steady stream of revisionist attitudes, the republication of controversial works long suppressed in Soviet Russia, and the publication of new material from the archives, the creation of a full biography is likely to remain a distant prospect for many years. The present volume hasbeen conceived first of all as a sketch towards such a new biography. The two hundred letters it contains, written between 1889 and Gorky's death in 1936, have been selected so as to allow Gorky to tell the story of his own life and reveal his hopes and fears, his observations and preoccupationsover a literary career which spanned almost fifty years....

When Yevsey Klimkov was four years old, his father was shot dead by the forester; and when he was seven years old, his mother died. She died suddenly in the field at harvest time. And so strange was this that Yevsey was not even frightened by the sight of her dead body.Uncle Piotr, a blacksmith, put his hand on the boy's head, and said:"What are we going to do now?"Yevsey took a sidelong glance at the corner where his mother lay upon a bench, and answered in a low voice:"I don't know."The blacksmith wiped the sweat from his face with his shirtsleeve, and after a long silence gently shoved his nephew aside."You're going to live with me," he said. "We'll send you to school, I suppose, so that you won't be in our way. Ah, you old man!"From that day the boy was called Old Man. The nickname suited him very well. He was too small for his age, his movements were sluggish, and his voice thin. A little bird-like nose stuck out sadly from a bony face, his round colorless eyes blinked timorously, his hair was sparse and grew in tufts. The impression he made was of a puny, shriveled-up little old fellow. The children in school laughed at him and beat him, his dull oldish look and his owl-like ...

Twenty-Six and One and Other Stories

Autor: Maxim Gorky

Número de Páginas: 84

Twenty-six and One and Other Stories by Maxim Gorky Maxim Gorky is the pen name of Aleksei Maksimovich Peshkov -- orphaned at the age of nine, he was raised by his grandmother, a story-teller, who imprinted on him a love for tales and travel. All of his varied jobs and the places, people and situations he encountered on his way can be found in his stories. From the introduction by Ivan Strannik: "The interest of these stories does not lie in the unraveling of an intricate plot. They are rather fragments of life, bits of biography covering some particular period, without reaching the limits of a real drama. And these are no more artificially combined than are the events of real life. Everything that he relates, Gorky has seen."

His popularity extends around the world, especially among the advanced workers, revolutionary intellectuals, oppressed peoples, and women who are fighting for their freedom. In this collection we have included a small sample of Gorky's writings, demonstrating the evolution of his ideas and his mature worldview. Additionally, there are articles showing Gorky's interactions with the great leaders of the Bolshevik Party, Lenin and Stalin. This collaboration laid the foundation for developing socialist realism in literature and art. Stories of the Steppe

Autor: Maxim Gorky

Número de Páginas: 60

Maxim Gorky, the bitter Voice of Russia, can tell fairy tales whose coloring has all the richness of oriental twilights and whose cadences are garlands woven of sea-spray and wind-blossoms. His stories of the steppe are not propagandistic, and with the exception of the powerful tale "Because of Monotony, " they are not sordid pictures of realistic misery, but they are sweet fairy lullabies that the gods must sing to the baby angels when they are sad and weary with their contemplation of human sorrows. These tales are filled with longing, and throughout that longing there is a thread of red fire that at times bursts forth into a flaming prophecy of hope. The Stories of the Steppe are among his most wonderful visions.

He inherited the best traditions of 19th century classical Russian literature and was at the same time the creator of a new art, socialist realism; he laid the foundations of the young Soviet Literature. Gorky was born "Aleksey Maksimovich Peshkov" on March 16, 1868, in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia -- which was later renamed in his honor after his death (ordered by Stalin himself, it is rumored). The bitterness of his early life led him to choose the name Maxim Gorky (which means "the bitter one") as his pseudonym. Although jailed periodically for association with revolutionaries and for his own outspoken opinion on the existing social order, Gorky managed to publish a few short stories, mostly about the tramps and derelicts he had met on his journeys. These short stories soon became very popular, touching the imagination of the Russian people. Gorky became a kind of folk hero. He was the first Russian author to write sympathetically of such characters as tramps and thieves, emphasizing their daily struggles...
