Understanding Spirituality and the Sacred in Social Work Practice

Autor: Mary Jo Mcveigh , Joel Hollier , Jioji Ravulo

Número de Páginas: 287

Social work is constantly epistemically evolving and embracing diverse bodies of knowledge to inform its ontology and practice frameworks. Over the years, the impact of feminist, post-colonial, and queer theory, for example, has broadened the social work lens and invited a welcome departure from dominant Westernised, patriarchal, and positivist paradigms. However, the separation of the spiritual realm from casework, clinical, community, and group work traditions of social work remained steadfast. The last decade or so has seen forages into the issues of social work and spirituality. This examination into spirituality and social work has shown that for many service users, spiritual practices (be they religious or non-religious) are important in their lives and their way out of difficulties. Concurrently, relationships between socio-political movements and global religions have grown increasingly complex. To create a truly holistic approach to the needs of service users it is important that social work policy and practice give voice to these complexities and understand the place of spirituality within service delivery. This book critically reflects upon and discusses the...

Prisoners of Hope

Autor: Nathan Mcconnell

Número de Páginas: 237

Prisoners of Hope focuses on ecclesiological and practical theological responses to migration, asylum-seeking, and refugee integration and assimilation. It considers the relationship between the church and the nation-state relative to political asylum by questioning the various responses of Christians who advocate for refugees and asylum-seekers in their spheres of influence. Prisoners of Hope features how the Church might begin to appraise and address the various socio-political strategies employed by nation-states, which situate migrants in a form of “quasi-political” status as they move from one place to another. It holds key benefits for exploring the philosophical and theological intersections of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Giorgio Agamben, and Seyla Benhabib and those attempting to ask about treatment of the refugees and asylum-seekers. Prisoners of Hope will be of particular interest to those attempting scholarly research in the areas of theology, religion, and migration studies as it investigates the phenomenological experiences of refugees going “in” and “out” of detention as well as arguments relating to porous borders within sovereign national entities. Initially,...

The Tontine, Volume 1

Autor: Thomas B. Costain

Número de Páginas: 703

Spanning 60+ years, beginning on the day Waterloo was won, it is a multigenerational story of 3 families during the Industrial Revolution. Lots of detailed descriptions of life among the varied social classes, it has been likened to stories by Dickens. It’s a very good historical fiction. A tontine is a life insurance scheme, stratified by age. Enrollees received payouts after an initial growth period, the amounts determined by the number of living recipients. Over time, as participants died, the payouts became more and more substantial. Towards the end, when the recipients became a mere handful, all sorts of betting occurred in the general populace on who would be the last survivor.

Augustine and Contemporary Social Issues

Autor: Paul L. Allen

Número de Páginas: 239

This book focuses on applying the thought of Saint Augustine to address a number of persistent 21st-century socio-political issues. Drawing together Augustinian ideas such as concupiscence, virtue, vice, habit, and sin through social and textual analysis, it provides fresh Augustinian perspectives on new—yet somehow familiar—quandaries. The volume addresses the themes of fallenness, politics, race, and desire. It includes contributions from theology, philosophy, and political science. Each chapter examines Augustine’s perspective for deepening our understanding of human nature and demonstrates the contemporary relevance of his thought.

EGLISE CATHOLIQUE ET MIGRATIONS - UNE EVALUATION ETHIQUE DU DISCOURS MAGISTERIEL ET DE SA RECEPTION

Autor: Nadembega Leonard , Moulins-beaufort Eric De

A Promised Land, a Perilous Journey

Autor: Daniel G. Groody , Gioacchino Campese

Número de Páginas: 372

A Christian theological interpretation of the border reality is a neglected area of immigration study. The foremost contribution of A Promised Land, A Perilous Journey is its focus on the theological dimension of migration, beginning with the humanity of the immigrant, a child of God and a bearer of his image. The nineteen authors in this collection recognize that one characteristic of globalization is the movement not only of goods and ideas but also of people. The crossing of geographical borders confronts Christians, as well as all citizens, with choices: between national security and human insecurity; between sovereign national rights and human rights; between citizenship and discipleship. Bearing these global dimensions in mind, the essays in this book focus on the particular problems of immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border. The contributors to this volume include scholars as well as pastors and lay people involved in immigration aid work. Daniel Groody has also produced a documentary on immigration, "Dying to Live." "A Promised Land, A Perilous Journey offers a rich, interdisciplinary treatment of the subject of migration, showing the human face of contemporary...

The Virgin of Guadalupe

Autor: Maxwell E. Johnson

Número de Páginas: 216

The appearance of the Virgin Mary on a hill in Guadalupe, Mexico in 1531 is perhaps the central tradition in Latino Catholicism. The vision, allegedly seen by recent convert Juan Diego, signalled the rise of Catholicism in the New World at a time when Protestantism was spreading throughout the old world. So what could a male, anglo protestant liturgist possibly have to say on the subject? In The Virgin of Guadalupe, Lutheran minister Maxwell Johnson recognizes that this tradition is not only important to Latin American Catholics, but to all Latin American Christians. Acknowledging the significance (if not, necessarily, the historical accuracy) of the appearance of the Virgin is not simply a Roman Catholic need by a necessity for all Christian churches among whom the Hispanic presence is growing. This is shown by the increased commemoration of Juan Diego on December 9, or of the Virgin of Guadalupe herself on December 12, on Protestant calendars. This increased recognition among Protestants coincides with the Pope's canonization of Saint Juan Diego in the summer of 2002. In step with this movement, Johnson considers the Virgin of Guadalupe from a Lutheran perspective and looks at...
