This is the fifty-sixth edition in this series. It is divided into two parts. Part one deals with the performance of the region's economy and begins with an introduction that summarizes recent trends and the challenges faced by economic policy-makers. Chapters cover the international situation and the external sector, macroeconomic (fiscal, exchange-rate and monetary) policy and regional trends in the level of economic activity, inflation, employment and wages. Two additional contributions take an in-depth look at key elements of the region's economic development and are also related to its performance in the short term. The chapter on economic policy also includes a section on the sustainability of the public debt, an increasingly important issue for many countries in the region. The first part of the Survey concludes with a chapter that offers a comparative analysis of the region's economic growth from a medium-term perspective. Part two provides overviews of macroeconomic policies and trends in the Latin American and Caribbean countries in 2003 and the first half of 2004. Special 60th Anniversary Edition! The Economic Survey is one of ECLAC's flagship publications, and has been issued since 1948. This new edition covers the region's economic performance in 2007 and the first semester of 2008, and suggests growth estimates for this year. The first chapter is a regional overview, including an analysis of economic policies applied in different countries, and their performance in terms of economic activity, inflation, labor markets, trade and capital flows. It provides an overview of global trends together with the associated challenges in the areas of human rights and equity; as well as the economic, social and environmental conditions in the region during the 1990s. Issues considered include: poverty reduction, education, employment, social security and social spending, social cohesion and citizenship, macroeconomic growth and stability, the regulation of public utilities and the consolidation of sustainable development.
