Modernity and the Architecture of Mexico

Modernity and the Architecture of Mexico

Autor: Edward R. Burian

Número de Páginas: 236

Since the mid 1970s, there has been an extraordinary renewal of interest in early modern architecture, both as a way of gaining insight into contemporary architectural culture and as a reaction to neoconservative postmodernism. This book undertakes a critical reappraisal of the notion of modernity in Mexican architecture and its influence on a generation of Mexican architects whose works spanned the 1920s through the 1960s. Nine essays by noted architects and architectural historians cover a range of topics from broad-based critical commentaries to discussions of individual architects and buildings. Among the latter are the architects Enrique del Moral, Juan O'Gorman, Carlos Obregón Santacilia, Juan Segura, Mario Pani, and the campus and stadium of the Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City. Relatively little has been published in English regarding this era in Mexican architecture. Thus, Modernity and the Architecture of Mexico will play a groundbreaking role in making the underlying assumptions, ideological and political constructs, and specific architect's agendas known to a wide audience in the humanities. Likewise, it should inspire greater appreciation for this undervalued body ...

Towards A New Engineering - second edition

Towards A New Engineering - second edition

Autor: Mentor Llunji

Número de Páginas: 482

This second-expanded edition of Towards A New Engineering is almost double in volume compared to the first edition, with several new chapters, new material and is more graphically oriented in order to guide readers more smoothly throughout the text. It is a collection of intimate reflections on structural engineering, its present and future. A testimony on many issues that ‘bothered’ the author during his years of designing structures. A critique and praise of built structures, structural design strategies, codes, the educational system, digital tools and much more. It’s a professional memoir dedicated to the unsung heroes of structural engineering. Not the unknown ones but the unrecognized ones. It’s an album of their thoughts and designs. This book is a rare possibility for structural engineers to consider the meaning of their profession, to meditate about it and its relation to, or distinction from, the practice of architecture. This is a collection of thoughts but not conclusions and theories. The book is recommended for all structural and architectural engineers, as well as for students of engineering and architecture, especially those who have chosen structural...

Historia de la familia Wiechers de México. De Barrien y Bremen al Nuevo Mundo. Tomo IV

Historia de la familia Wiechers de México. De Barrien y Bremen al Nuevo Mundo. Tomo IV

Architecture in Development

Architecture in Development

Autor: Aggregate Architectural History Collaborative

Número de Páginas: 550

This extensive text investigates how architects, planners, and other related experts responded to the contexts and discourses of “development” after World War II. Development theory did not manifest itself in tracts of economic and political theory alone. It manifested itself in every sphere of expression where economic predicaments might be seen to impinge on cultural factors. Architecture appears in development discourse as a terrain between culture and economics, in that practitioners took on the mantle of modernist expression while also acquiring government contracts and immersing themselves in bureaucratic processes. This book considers how, for a brief period, architects, planners, structural engineers, and various practitioners of the built environment employed themselves in designing all the intimate spheres of life, but from a consolidated space of expertise. Seen in these terms, development was, to cite Arturo Escobar, an immense design project itself, one that requires radical disassembly and rethinking beyond the umbrella terms of “global modernism” and “colonial modernities,” which risk erasing the sinews of conflict encountered in globalizing and...
