Embracing Vocation

Embracing Vocation

Autor: Dianne C. Luce

Número de Páginas: 338

Revelations on craft from a foundational scholar of Cormac McCarthy Devotees of Cormac McCarthy's novels are legion, and deservedly so. Embracing Vocation, which tells the tale of his journey to become one of America's greatest living writers, will be invaluable to scholars and literary critics—and to the many fans—interested in his work. Dianne C. Luce, a foundational scholar of McCarthy's writing, through extensive archival research, examines the first fifteen years of his career and his earliest novels. Novel by novel, Luce traces each book's evolution. In the process she unveils McCarthy's working processes as well as his personal, literary, and professional influences, highlighting his ferocious devotion to both his craft and burgeoning art. Luce invites us to see the fascinating evolution of an American author with a unique vision all his own. Until there is a full-on biography, this study, along with Luce's previous, Reading the World: Cormac McCarthy's Tennessee Period, is the finest available portrait of an American genius unfolding.

Número de Páginas: 493

Murder Inc. is the latest blockbuster by Ireland's most respected crime writer and journalist, Paul Williams. Murder Inc. is the definitive account of how organized crime exploded in Limerick from the 1990s and in the noughties. It describes the depravity and decadence of the gangs, their deadly rivaliries, and their reigns of terror over the community in which they lived. Finally, Williams traces the faultlines that eventually led to the implosion of the gangs and their defeat. Drawing on his vast inside knowledge of the criminal underworld, an unparalleled range of contacts and eye witness interviews, Paul Williams provides a chilling insight into the mobsters and events that corroded entire neighbourhoods and devastated countless lives.

Cormac McCarthy's Literary Evolution

Cormac McCarthy's Literary Evolution

Autor: Daniel King

Número de Páginas: 241

“Daniel King has performed a service long overdue for scholars and avid readers of McCarthy's work. Incorporating correspondence to and from his editors and agents, and relating comments he penciled into the margins of his in-progress manuscripts, King has given us a finely detailed portrait of the craftsman at work. It's an enjoyably readable account of how the master bricoleur revised, reconsidered, and ultimately built the novels which so challenge and delight us.” —Rick Wallach, editor of Myth, Legend, Dust: Critical Responses to Cormac McCarthy When the New York Times published the first print interview with Cormac McCarthy in 1992, the author was barely known outside a small group of academics, writers, and devoted readers. None of his books, up to that point, had sold more than five thousand copies in hardcover. But that same year McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses made the best-seller lists, and over the next two decades, with the publication of such books as No Country for Old Men, the basis for the Coen brothers’ Oscar-winning film, and The Road, a Pulitzer Prize winner and an Oprah’s Book Club selection, McCarthy became a household name. In Cormac McCarthy’s ...

Trails to Gold

Trails to Gold

Autor: Branwen Christine Patenaude

Número de Páginas: 292

The pioneer roadhouses between Clinton and Barkerville provide a living heritage of the colourful era of the Cariboo gold rush. While thousands plodded toward Barkerville dreaming of pay dirt on Williams Creek, always seeking a faster route to the motherlode, a separate breed of settlers created the shelters that would ease their journey. The trail was everchanging, and when the rush was over the Cariboo-Chilcotin was left with a mosaic of roadhouses and a legacy to build on. These structures had their own stories, tales of wild nights and human heartbreak, sagas of sin and sincerity. In the first volume of Trails to Gold, the author described the early inns, primarily south of Clinton, which preceded the construction of the Cariboo Road between 1862 and 1865. This volume completes the story of the peak years of a gold rush that British Columbia will never forget.

Corpus and Sociolinguistics

Corpus and Sociolinguistics

Autor: Bróna Murphy

Número de Páginas: 251

Age is by far the most underdeveloped of the sociolinguistic variables in terms of research literature. To-date, research on age has been patchy and has generally focused on the early life-stages such as childhood and adolescence, ignoring, for the most part, healthy adulthood as a stage worthy of scrutiny. This book examines the discourse of adulthood and accounts for sociolinguistic variation, with regards to age and gender, through the exploration of a 90,000 word age-and gender-differentiated spoken corpus of Irish English. The book explores both the distribution and use of a number of high frequency pragmatic features of spoken discourse that appear as key items in the corpus. Part 1 of the book provides an introduction, a theoretical overview of age as a sociolinguistic variable and a description on how to compile a small spoken corpus for sociolinguistic research. Part 2 consists of five chapters which investigate and explore key features such as hedges, vague category markers, intensifiers, boosters and high-frequent items of taboo language in relation to the variables, age and gender. The book is of interest to undergraduates or postgraduates taking formal courses in...

VCs of the First World War: Road to Victory 1918

VCs of the First World War: Road to Victory 1918

Autor: Gerald Gliddon

Número de Páginas: 423

By August 1918 fortune was on the side of the Allies: America was increasing its contribution of troops and equipment substantially; the morale of the German Army was sinking as it failed to deliver the desired 'knock out blow'; and Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig found a new confidence, firmly believing that the Allies could at last push the Germans out of France and Belgium. This volume of the best-selling VCs of the First World War series covers the fifty days of the Allied advance from 8 August to 26 September 1918. Arranged chronologically, it tells the story of the sixty-four VC winners during this period. The recipients came from many countries, including Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; some never lived to know that they had been awarded for their extraordinary bravery, while others returned home to face an uncertain future. This is their story.

Spoken Corpora in Applied Linguistics

Spoken Corpora in Applied Linguistics

Autor: Mari Carmen Campoy , María José Luzón

Número de Páginas: 288

This volume explores the opportunities that spoken corpora offer and the challenges of research with such corpora. The use and applications of spoken corpora are discussed from the perspective of both language analysis and language pedagogy. Twelve chapters written by corpus linguists analyse an extensive number of spoken corpora based on the oral production of speakers as varied as language learners, users of English as Lingua Franca, native speakers, or speakers of English in academic contexts. This book also highlights the growing emphasis on the use of corpus-based research by examining the implications of corpus findings in educational settings.

Precepting Medical Students in the Office

Precepting Medical Students in the Office

Autor: Paul M. Paulman , Jeffrey Susman , Cheryl A. Abboud

Número de Páginas: 240

"Medical knowledge and training have evolved dramatically over the centuries, but the tradition of dedicated physicians sharing their knowledge, skills, experience, and wisdom with the next generation of young medical students is still vital. Much of today's medical training is of a technical nature, but in reality physicians are as much artists as technicians, and the art of medicine is a skill that cannot be learned in a classroom. As Hippocrates put it a long time ago, the doctor who despises the knowledge acquired by the ancients is foolish." --from the Foreword, by Stuart P. Embury, M.D. As medical education curricula continue to evolve, many medical schools are implementing programs that allow students to spend a portion of their time observing primary care physicians in their offices. Currently, more than 20,000 physicians are precepting medical students in this way, and the number will grow as more and more educational programs attempt to move medical student experiences into the community. In Precepting Medical Students in the Office, Paul M. Paulman, M.D., Jeffrey L. Susman, M.D., and Cheryl A. Abboud, M.P.A., bring together experts in the field of family medicine to...

The Many Deaths of Mary Dobie: Murder, Politics and Revenge in Nineteenth-Century New Zealand

The Many Deaths of Mary Dobie: Murder, Politics and Revenge in Nineteenth-Century New Zealand

Autor: David Hastings

Número de Páginas: 280

Dreadful murder at Opunake', said the Taranaki Herald, 'Shocking outrage', cried the Evening Post in Wellington when they learned in November 1880 that a young woman called Mary Dobie had been found lying under a flax bush near Opunake on the Taranaki coast with her throat cut so deep her head was almost severed. In the midst of tensions between Maori and Pakeha, the murder ignited questions: Pakeha feared it was an act of political terrorism in response to the state's determination to take the land of the tribes in the region. Maori thought it would be the cue for the state to use force against them, especially the pacifist settlement at Parihaka. Was it rape or robbery, was the killer Maori or Pakeha? In this book, David Hastings takes us back to that lonely road on the Taranaki coast in nineteenth-century New Zealand to unravels the many deaths of Mary Dobie - the murder, the social tensions in Taranaki, the hunt for the killer and the lessons that Maori and Pakeha learnt about the murder and about themselves.

The Irish in the Resistance

The Irish in the Resistance

Autor: Clodagh Finn , John Morgan

Número de Páginas: 345

'You simply couldn't stand by with your arms folded.' These were the words of Samuel Beckett who famously returned to France from a holiday in Ireland when World War II broke out. His clandestine work against the Nazi occupation of Europe is well documented, but there were many other ordinary Irish people who joined the underground network. Some took up arms. Others gathered intelligence, sheltered fugitives, committed acts of sabotage or broke codes. This new history tells the stories of those forgotten Irish men and women. Discover Captain John Keany from Cork, who parachuted into occupied Italy to help the local Resistance; Margaret Kelly, the Dublin founder of the world-famous Bluebell Girls cabaret troupe in Paris, who hid her Jewish husband; and Catherine Crean, the Irish governess born on Moore Street, Dublin, who was sent to a concentration camp for helping Allied airmen in Belgium. These, and many more stories, span the course of World War II and remind us of the power of individuals to make a difference. 'An eye-opening account of how ordinary people caught up in extraordinary situations helped to fight the Nazis' David McCullagh 'A truly important and groundbreaking...
