This is a modern-spelling edition of John Greaves’s Pyramidographia (1646), together with some miscellaneous travel-writings, letters and a biography of Greaves by Thomas Birch. It includes a full scholarly introduction and detailed notes. This book is the first of its kind in English, and undertakes a scientific evaluation of the pyramids through metrics, using state-of-the-art instruments and drawing on both ancient and modern authorities, amongst which is included Arab and Persian writers as well as Western sources. Greaves’s work is distinguished from others by his refusal to be drawn into mystical or theological speculation, and is an excellent example of how seventeenth-century scientists may be said to have pioneered modern methods of scientific inquiry. Greaves discusses the age of the pyramids, their purpose, the nature of their builders and the methods he believes were used to erect them. It may be said that he is probably the earliest genuine English “Egyptologist”, and that Pyramidographia is indeed the earliest scientific treatise on the subject. Séptimo centenario de los estudios orientales en Salamanca

En el concilio celebrado en Vienne (Francia) en 1311, el papa Clemente V decretó un Canon en el que se autorizaba y ordenaba a las universidades de Salamanca, Oxford, París y Bolonia la enseñanza de lenguas orientales, en concreto, de «árabe, hebreo y caldeo». El canon conciliar de Clemente V no cayó en papel mojado y tuvo como consecuencia el comienzo inmediato en Salamanca de la enseñanza de lenguas orientales entre las que ocupó un lugar preferente el hebreo. De hecho, el hebreo permaneció en el elenco de enseñanzas de la Universidad de Salamanca desde esa fecha hasta la desamortización de Mendizábal (1836). Doscientos años más tarde (1521) se introdujeron las enseñanzas de hebreo en la Universidad de Alcalá que corrieron la misma suerte que los estudios de Salamanca con la mencionada desamortización. A mediados del s. XIX hubo un nuevo impulso de los estudio de hebreo que se introdujeron en las Universidades de Madrid, Barcelona y, una vez más, Salamanca. Federico Olóriz Aguilera (1855-1912), granadino y antiguo alumno de nuestra Facultad de Medicina, fue catedrático de Anatomía Humana en Madrid entre 1883 y 1912. Junto a Cajal y otros, perteneció a la "Generación de Sabios" que tanto hicieron por la ciencia española en el cambio de siglo, con gran escasez de medios, pero con mucha voluntad y trabajo personal. Olóriz, a quien recordamos especialmente por su contribución al estudio de las huellas dactilares, tuvo una vida absolutamente metódica, que le hizo contabilizar su trabajo en cuartos de hora. Así lo anota en su Diario de 1884, que trascribimos y comentamos; fue su primer año completo en Madrid. En sus páginas queda reflejada su vida, tanto familiar como académica, y lo acompañamos con el análisis de todas las circunstancias que pudieron estar relacionadas con él, con su familia, con su facultad y universidad, con la medicina de la época, con diferentes instituciones madrileñas, en definitiva, con la España de finales del XIX.
