John Singer Sargent

Sargent Portrait Drawings

Autor: John Singer Sargent , Trevor J. Fairbrother

Número de Páginas: 52

Portraiture is a demanding art requiring the artist to capture a likeness and render it revealing some hint of the personality behind the image. A two-pronged task, it requires great technical skill and an intuitive eye. In both these respects, John Singer Sargent stands out as a portrait artist of major stature. Born in 1856 in Florence of American parents, Sargent showed artistic aptitude at an early age and was enrolled at the Academia delle Belle Arti in that city. Later he studied with Parisian artist Carolus Duran, acquiring the loose, painterly style for which he is renowned. International acclaim as a portrait artist came early in his life and followed him throughout his career. Sargent's portraits done in oil are well known; they appear in major museums throughout the world. A lesser-known but no less respected aspect of his oeuvre, his portrait drawings are the focus of this collection. Included here are early works in pencil and pastels, and later renderings in charcoal, a medium Sargent favored after 1910. They have been selected from both public and private collections by art historian Trevor J. Fairbrother and attest to Sargent's technical skill, versatility, and...

Autor: The Hon. Sir Evan Charteris

Número de Páginas: 308

The career of John Sargent, perhaps the greatest painter of his time, and surely one of the greatest portrayers and interpreters of it in his famous portraits of its most eminent and most representative figures, is here chronicled in successive stages. The figure of the hero stands out in high relief from the narrative which his personality pervades. A wealth of anecdote and of letters enriches the record of work, travel, and triumph, from student days under Carolus-Duran to the time when the presidency of the Royal Academy could have been his; and in all this opulent detail the character of the man overshadows even the distinction of the artist as the true theme of the book.

The official biography of John Singer Sargent This book is the official biography of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), published two years after his death in 1927, by his friend the Hon. Evan Charteris. John Sargent was the leading portrait painter of his generation, famous for his portrayal of Edwardian era high society. He was born in Florence to American parents and remained throughout his life an expatriate artist, travailing throughout Europe and eventually settling at his London studio at 31, Tite Street. In later life he retired from portraiture to complete public murals in America. This book documents Sargent's journey, starting as shy, rambunctious child more interested in the outdoors than schooling, and with a natural talent for drawing. His mother Mrs. Sargent, with her insatiable love of travel, was convinced that traveling around Europe was a satisfactory alternative to formal education for the young artist. In Mürren, among the Swiss mountains, he received his first lessons on how to draw a head from Mr. Joseph Farquharson. In Rome, at age thirteen, he studied watercolor under the guidance of the German-American landscape painter Carl Welsch. At age eighteen he...

Sargent

Autor: John Esten , John Singer Sargent

Número de Páginas: 88

"John Singer Sargent, the celebrated portrait painter of the fashionable and famous of the fin de siecle and the Gilded Age, maintained the yearly routine, begun during his student days, of taking painting sabbaticals with a select company of artist friends and family, traveling as far east as Palestine and as far west as the Canadian Rockies. John Esten has assembled a shining collection of drawings, paintings, and watercolors by Sargent - many of them rarely seen - on the friends and family that accompanied him on these holiday excursions. Sargent's works, along with selected paintings, watercolors, and photographs done by his friends in the locations where he painted them, have been further illuminated by descriptions of artists painting and outdoor places by Sargent's champion and life-long friend Henry James."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Painter of languid, elegant, Edwardian beauties and sharply dressed gentlemen, John Singer Sargent was the ultimate society painter. He knew everyone who was anyone and was on personal terms with many of them, including Edward VII and the U.S. presidents Roosevelt and Wilson. This social standing was justified. Sargent was one of the greatest portr

Published on occasion of the major Sargent retrospective traveling to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1999, John Singer Sargent: The Male Nudes brings to light a fascinating portion of Sargent's work long hidden from the public eye. Beginning in his adolescence, and throughout his distinguished career, John Singer Sargent, the celebrated painter of patricians, produced a superbly rendered, uninhibited body of work that was rarely seen and never exhibited: the male nudes. Over the last century, these little-known works have been dispersed to museum archives and private collections throughout the United States and Great Britain. John Esten has unearthed the most extraordinary of these images, ranging from vibrant watercolors and oil paintings to charcoal studies, published here for the first time in a single volume.

John Singer Sargent and His Muse

Autor: Karen Corsano , Daniel Williman

Número de Páginas: 0

This sensitive and compelling biography sheds new light on John Singer Sargent's art through an intimate history of his family. Karen Corsano and Daniel Williman focus especially on his niece and muse, Rose-Marie Ormond, who married the only son of Andre Michel, the foremost art historian of his day. Robert was a promising historian as well, until the Great War claimed him in 1914. His widow Rose-Marie served as a nurse for blinded French soldiers until she too was killed in 1918. Sargent expressed his grief on canvas, painting ruined French churches and, in Gassed, blinded soldiers; he made his last murals for the Boston Public Library a cryptic memorial to Rose-Marie and her beloved Robert. Drawing on a rich trove of letters, diaries, and journals, this beautifully illustrated history brings Sargent and his times to vivid life.

John Singer Sargent and artworks

Sargent was born in Florence, in 1856, the son of cultivated parents. When Sargent entered the school of Carolus-Duran he attained much more than the average pupils. His father was a retired Massachusetts gentleman, having practised medicine in Philadelphia. Sargent’s home life was penetrated with refinement, and outside it were the beautiful influences of Florence, combining the charms of sky and hills with the wonders of art in the galleries and the opportunities of an intellectual and artistic society. Accordingly, when Sargent arrived in Paris, he was not only a skilful draughtsman and painter as a result of his study of the Italian masters, but he also had a refined and cultivated taste, which perhaps had an even greater influence upon his career. Later in Spain, it was chiefly upon the lessons learned from Velázquez that he found his own brilliant method. Sargent belongs to America, but is claimed by others as a citizen of the world, or a cosmopolitan. Sargent, with the exception of a few months at distant intervals, spent his life abroad. The artistic influences which affected him were those of Europe. Yet his Americanism may be detected in his extraordinary facility to...
