Catholic Advocate of the Evangelical Truth

Autor: Franz Posset

Número de Páginas: 241

Eight studies on the life and work of Marcus Marulus of Split (1450–1524) are assembled here under the title Catholic Advocate of the Evangelical Truth. They focus on what Marulus and Martin Luther have in common; on Marulus’s Carmen, “Christ Speaking from the Cross”; on his metaphors for “empires” in his Latin works and in comparison with the contemporary German Humanist Ulrich von Hutten; on Marulus’s open letter to the pope; on his reading of the four volumes of the illustrated Biblia Latina and samples of the marginalia which he entered; on his understanding of the “Rock” in Matthew 16:18; on the “Tree of the Cross” and other early Latin poetry; and on his view of Christian-Muslim relations.

Imagined, Embodied and Actual Turks in Early Modern Europe

Autor: Bent Holm , Mikael Bøgh Rasmussen

Número de Páginas: 555

The confrontation between European countries and the expanding Ottoman Empire in the early modern era has played a major role in numerous fields of history. The aim of this book is to investigate the European-Ottoman interrelations from three angles. One deals with the circumstances: How did the Europeans meet the Turks in pragmatic and diplomatic connections? Another concerns imagery: how were the Turks depicted in literature and art? The third examines performativity: how were the Turks inserted into plays, operas and ceremonies? This book confronts mental, visual and embodied images with historical positions and conditions. The focus, therefore, is on the dynamic interactive processes of experience, embodiment and imagination in context. Bringing together Turkish and European scholars, it applies a number of research strategies used by historians to the history of art, literature, music and theatre. Autor: Igor Candido

Ovid and Masculinity in English Renaissance Literature

Autor: John S. Garrison , Goran Stanivukovic

Número de Páginas: 325

Ovid transformed English Renaissance literary ideas about love, erotic desire, embodiment, and gender more than any other classical poet. Ovidian concepts of femininity have been well served by modern criticism, but Ovid's impact on masculinity in Renaissance literature remains underexamined. This volume explores how English Renaissance writers shifted away from Virgilian heroic figures to embrace romantic ideals of courtship, civility, and friendship. Ovid's writing about masculinity, love, and desire shaped discourses of masculinity across a wide range of literary texts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including poetry, prose fiction, and drama. The book covers all major works by Ovid, in addition to Italian humanists Angelo Poliziano and Natale Conti, canonical writers such as William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, Edmund Spenser, Philip Sidney, and John Milton, and lesser-known writers such as Wynkyn de Worde, Michael Drayton, Thomas Lodge, Richard Johnson, Robert Greene, John Marston, Thomas Heywood, and Francis Beaumont. Individual essays examine emasculation, abjection, pacifism, female masculinity, boys' masculinity, parody, hospitality, and...

Dissimulation and the Culture of Secrecy in Early Modern Europe

Autor: Jon R. Snyder

Número de Páginas: 320

"A major scholarly achievement, which speaks to multiple disciplines and national traditions...Snyder offers an elegant introduction to the discourse of dissimulation in the courtly world of sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe, then moves beyond to make an important, original intervention on a topic that stands at the center of current debates about modernity."--Albert Ascoli, author of Dante and the Making of a Modern Author "The Baroque is the time of 'Machiavellianism' in politics, ethics, and religion. It is the time of esthetics of ostentation, chiaroscuros, and monumental theatricality. Paradoxically, it is also the time when freedom of thought, the value of dissidence, questions of authenticity, debates about virtues, and practices of confessions come to the fore. Snyder brings all these issues to new life in this deft and powerful book."--Giuseppe Mazzotta, author of The New Map of the World: the Poetic Philosophy of Giambattista Vico
