History of the Geological Sciences in Argentina

Autor: Victor A. Ramos

Número de Páginas: 446

The science of geology is intertwined with the growth of the field in Argentina. This book explores those dual historical developments and, as an expanded translation of Historia de la Geología Argentina: Una Crónica de Más de Dos Siglos, shares them with a global audience. Drawing on the author's extensive work throughout the country as well as documents and photographs from the archives of the National Geological Survey, General Archive of the Nation, and the universities of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and La Plata, this book offers a once-in-a-century look at developments in the field of geology from a country-specific perspective.

The Late Cenozoic of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego

Autor: J. Rabassa

Número de Páginas: 523

Written by highly qualified Argentine scientists and scholars, this book focuses on the uninterrupted geological and paleontological record of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego since the Miocene-Pliocene boundary to the arrival of man and modern times. This region is an outstanding area for research, with significant interest at the international level. It provides an updated overview of the scientific work in all related fields with a strong paleoclimatic approach. Patagonia has also been a sort of a "paleoclimatic bridge" between the Antarctic Peninsula and the more northerly land masses, since the final opening of the Drake Passage in the middle Miocene. Timely and comprehensive, The Late Cenozoic of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego is the only monograph book written in English.* One-stop resource for paleontological information of the Late Cenozoic of Patagonia* Covers 5 million years in the uninterrupted history of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego* Comprehensive coverage of the region written by highly qualified Argentine scientists and scholars

Advances in Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies in Argentina

Autor: Jorge Rabassa

Número de Páginas: 324

This proceedings volume presents selected research highlights from the Sixth Argentine Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies Congress, hosted at CADIC, Ushuaia, on April 8–12, 2015 by the Argentine Association of Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies (AACYG). The congress included special sessions, symposia, invited lectures and posters on the following topics: Quaternary stratigraphy and geochronology, paleontology (diatoms, mollusks, foraminifera, palynology, phytoliths, paleobotany, vertebrates), dendrochronology, climate change, paleoclimate, Pampean Quaternary paleolimnology, paleomagnetism, environmental magnetism, hydrogeochemical processes, geoarchaeology, geomorphology, structural geology and neotectonics, paleosurfaces, volcanism, geological hazards, assets, geomorphosites, and digital mapping. The Scientific Committee of the Congress has selected the papers published in this volume from more than 150 contributions in many different disciplines.

Quaternary Glaciations - Extent and Chronology

Autor: J. Ehlers , P.l. Gibbard

Número de Páginas: 390

This book is the last of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. Where controversial interpretations are possible, such as for High Asia, they are indicated. All information on Quaternary glaciations worldwide is presented for the first time in a uniform format, including the mountain glaciations of regions such as...
