An Intergenerational Feminist Media Studies

An Intergenerational Feminist Media Studies

Autor: Jessalynn Keller , Jo Littler , Alison Winch

Número de Páginas: 381

Feminism and generation are live and ideologically freighted issues that are subject to a substantial amount of media engagement. The figure of the millennial and the baby boomer, for example, regularly circulate in mainstream media, often accompanied by hyperbolic and vitriolic discourses and effects of intergenerational feminist conflict. In addition, theories of feminist generation and waves have been, and continue to be, extensively critiqued within feminist theory. Given the compelling criticisms directed at these categories, we ask: why bother examining and foregrounding issues of generation, intergeneration, and transgeneration in feminist media studies? While remaining skeptical of linearity and familial metaphors and of repeating reductive, heteronormative, and racist versions of feminist movements, we believe that the concept of generation does have critical purchase for feminist media scholars. Indeed, precisely because of the problematic ways in which it is used, and its prevalence as a volatile, yet only too palpable, organizing category, generation is in need of continual critical analysis, and is an important tool to be used—with care and nuance—when examining...

The Walking Tour

Autor: Kathryn Davis

Número de Páginas: 278

Two couples -- businessman Bobby Rose and his artist wife, Carole Ridingham; his partner, Coleman Snow, and Snow's wife, Ruth Farr -- have gone on a walking tour in Wales, during which a fatal accident occurs. The question of what happened preoccupies not only an ensuing negligence trial but also the narrator, Bobby and Carole's daughter, Susan, who lives alone in her parents' house near the coast of Maine. Assisted by court transcripts, a notebook computer containing Ruth Farr's journal, and a young vagrant who has taken to camping on her doorstep, Susan lays open the moral predicament at the heart of the book: we are culpable beings, even though we live in a world of imperfect knowledge.

Pathologies of Patriarchy

Pathologies of Patriarchy

Autor: Eloho Ese Basikoro

Número de Páginas: 218

In the delta region of Nigeria, women seeking HIV care face a plethora of deeply gendered inequalities. As a result, HIV-positive women are often unable to use the treatment schemes that are seemingly available to them. Pathologies of Patriarchy brings together a geographic analysis of gendered inequalities with practical implementation questions concerning the limits of current global health programming. This book is an experiential analysis of HIV treatment programs that includes first-hand accounts of how female patients explain and cope with the poor access to and the inconsistencies in the delivery of HIV service care that complicates their adherence to treatment, as well as the complex power relations they navigate daily. Eloho Ese Basikoro also addresses the failures of policymakers who talk about gender mainstreaming but fail to deliver sustainable health services for disenfranchised women suffering from the social stigma and alienation associated with seropositivity. This inter-regional study is of great interdisciplinary interest to a wide variety of scholars and policymakers, whether they are researching gendered inequality from a geographical, anthropological, or...

When Rock Met Disco

When Rock Met Disco

Autor: Steven Blush

Número de Páginas: 299

Disco began as a gay, black, and brown underground New York City party music scene, which alone was enough to ward off most rockers. The difference between rock and disco was as sociological as it was aesthetic. At its best, disco was galvanizing and affirmative. Its hypnotic power to uplift a broad spectrum of the populace made it the ubiquitous music of the late '70s. Disco was a primal and gaudy fanfare for the apocalypse, a rage for exhibitionism, free of moralizing. Disco was an exclamatory musical passageway into the future. 1978 was the apex of the record industry. Rock music, commercially and artistically, had never been more successful. At the same time, disco was responsible for roughly 40% of the records on Billboard's Hot 100, thanks to the largest-selling soundtrack of all time in Saturday Night Fever. The craze for this music by The Bee Gees revived The Hustle and dance studios across America. For all its apparent excesses and ritual zealotry, disco was a conservative realm, with obsolete rules like formal dress code and dance floor etiquette. When most '70s artists "went disco," it was the relatively few daring rockers who had the most impact, bringing their...

Mel and Sue - The Biography

Mel and Sue - The Biography

Autor: Tina Campanella

Número de Páginas: 238

With their silly puns, down-to-earth style and obvious affection for each other, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins were a defining part of 1990s popular culture. For two years their hit show, Light Lunch, was staple viewing for housewives and students up and down the country, and with lucrative advertising deals and endless panel show invitations it seemed like the duo were destined for superstardom. Comedy queens French and Saunders were even ready to hand over their crowns to the young stars, who they saw as their natural successors. But just a few short years later, Mel and Sue had gone their separate ways, leaving their loyal fans in mourning over the loss of the light-hearted double act. While Sue's career progressed steadily over the years, Mel's stalled, and with two young kids and a large mortgage she and her husband were left on the verge of bankruptcy. And although Sue was so popular she was hardly off our screens, her personal life wasn't always so uncomplicated. It would take ten years of hard work and setbacks before the revival of their old partnership would shoot them once more to the top - and cement their place in the nation's heart. In this, the first biography of the ...

Global Perspectives on Motherhood, Mothering and Masculinities

Global Perspectives on Motherhood, Mothering and Masculinities

Autor: Andrea Moraes , Tola Olu Pearce

Número de Páginas: 256

The two phenomena highlighted in this edited volume 'motherhood/mothering and masculinities' are each recent areas of development in critical Feminist and Men's Studies. In contributing to these areas of gender studies, this book draws attention to the fact that much can also be gained when we explore relationships between them, an idea that may not readily come to mind. While femininities and masculinities are co-constructed, motherhood and mothering bring additional perspectives to the study of femininity that affect the construction of masculinity in complex ways. The 12 chapters in this volume allow readers to ponder some of these complexities and may suggest other issues that require investigation. Spanning many continents, the essays have both a global and historical reach emphasising cultural differences and historical changes. Of import is the idea that mothers have agency and are active in constructions affecting their lives. They are able to bring motherhood out of the shadows as they strive to build, re-evaluate, or alter their roles within families and communities. These have an impact on developments in masculinities. The book is divided into three parts and the...

The Dance of 17 Lives

The Dance of 17 Lives

Autor: Mick Brown

Número de Páginas: 303

In January 2000, two Ambassador taxis twisted their way up the narrow road leading towards Dharamsala in the Himalayan foothills of northern India - the home-in-exile of the Dalai Lama. In one taxi was a fourteen-year-old boy, the 17th Karmapa, one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism. The boy's arrival in Dharamsala was the culmination of an extraordinary escape which had brought him 900 miles across the Himalayas, in conditions of high danger, from the monastery in Tibet where he had lived since he was seven years old. Fascinated by this charismatic young figure, Mick Brown travelled to Dharamsala to meet him, and found himself drawn into the labyrinthine - not to say surreal - web of intrigue surrounding the 17th Karmapa's recognition and young life.

Reimagining the Gendered Nation

Reimagining the Gendered Nation

Autor: Christina Kenny

Número de Páginas: 250

Explores the complex and intersecting dimensions of gender, ethnicity, and culture on women in the Global South, as well as the central roles of women in resisting colonial rule, and their foundational contributions to post-independence constitutional reform and nation building. For all the effort and attention women across the Global South receive from the international human rights community and from their own governments, human rights frameworks frequently fail to significantly improve the lives of these women or their communities. Taking Kenya as a case study, this book explores the reasons for this, emphasising the need to understand the effects of the legacy of local colonial and postcolonial histories on the production of gendered identities and power in modern Kenyan cultural and political life. Drawing on interviews with women in Nairobi and rural areas around Lake Victoria in Kenya, the author examinestheir access to, and experiences of, civil and political rights and citizenship, beginning with the colonial encounter, following these legacies into modern times, and the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution. In four thematic chapters, Kenny discusses women as victims and...

Crossroads in the Black Aegean

Crossroads in the Black Aegean

Autor: Barbara Goff , Michael Simpson

Número de Páginas: 674

Crossroads in the Black Aegean is a compendious, timely, and fascinating study of African rewritings of Greek tragedy. It consists of detailed readings of six dramas and one epic poem, from different locations across the African diaspora. Barbara Goff and Michael Simpson ask why the plays of Sophocles' Theban Cycle figure so prominently among the tragedies adapted by dramatists of African descent, and how plays that dilate on the power of the past, in the inexorable curse of Oedipus and the regressive obsession of Antigone, can articulate the postcolonial moment. Capitalizing on classical reception studies, postcolonial studies, and comparative literature, Crossroads in the Black Aegean co-ordinates theory and theatre. It crucially investigates how the plays engage with the 'Western canon', and shows how they use their self-consciously literary status to assert, ironize, and challenge their own place, and that of the Greek originals, in relation to that tradition. Beyond these oedipal reflexes, the adaptations offer alternative African models of cultural transmission.
