Little Women and Good Wives, published in 1868 and 1869 respectively, is a story following the four March sisters and their friend Theodore "Laurie" Lawrence in Massachusetts in the 1800's. The four girls each exhibit individual flaws and much of the plot is concerned with their journey to correct themselves, always supporting each other in the end despite their numerous squabbles. Margaret "Meg" March is the eldest sister and at the beginning of the tale is very preoccupied with materialistic possessions, Josephine "Jo" March is a tomboy with a fiery temper, Elizabeth "Beth" March is shy and gentle and Amy, being the youngest March sister, is spoilt and therefore prone to temper tantrums. Little Women follows the sisters for about a year, but Good Wives skips forward in time regularly so that by the end they are all of adult age. Las mujercitas protagonistas de las tres primeras historias que integran esta antología —«Lirios acuáticos», «El secreto de Sophie» y «El debut de Debby»— aparecen como versiones actualizadas de «La Cenicienta», ambientadas en un escenario familiar para Alcott, y en las que se prescinde, entre otras muchas innovaciones, de la rivalidad entre hermanas. Según se presentan aquí, se observa cómo el elemento más reconocible del cuento —la buena doncella que espera al príncipe que ha de sacarla de la pobreza— se va desdibujando: Ruth, en la primera de las historias, se desposa con su príncipe; no sabemos si Tilly, en la segunda, lo hace o no; y Debby, en la tercera, se casa, pero con un hombre sin más patrimonio que «un corazón fiel», unos «brazos fuertes» y «un apellido honesto». Louisa May Alcott (November 29, 1832 - March 6, 1888) was an American novelist. She is best known for the novel Little Women, published in 1868. This novel is loosely based on her childhood experiences with her three sisters.
