Open Regionalism in Latin America and the Caribbean

Autor: United Nations. Economic Commission For Latin America And The Caribbean

Número de Páginas: 108

"An attempt to answer some general and specific questions regarding regional integration, such as: Why should integration be encouraged? What kind of integration should be encouraged? Which mechanisms and instruments are most suitable for integrating economies at this point? How do the new integration plans differ from those of the 1960s and 1970s? The answers to these and other questions 'are based on the core premise that recent integration efforts have generally involved the interaction of two types of phenomena:' trade liberalization and deregulation policies introduced at the national level; and explicit agreements or policies which entail certain preferences with respect to the treatment accorded other nations"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57

Growth, Employment, and Equity

Growth, Employment, and Equity

Autor: Barbara Stallings , Wilson Peres

Número de Páginas: 276

A Brookings Institution Press and Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) publication In the last ten to fifteen years, the Latin American and Caribbean region has undergone the most significant transformation of economic policy since World War II. Through a series of structural reforms, an increasing number of countries have moved from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market oriented and open to the rest of the world. Policymakers expected that these changes, in conjunction with lower rates of inflation and increased spending in the social area, would speed up economic growth, increase productivity, and lead to the creation of more jobs and greater equality. Have those expectations been fulfilled? Analyzing the impact of the reforms in nine countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru), this study provides a detailed picture of progress to date. At the overall regional level, the book suggests, the reforms have had a surprisingly small impact: a small positive impact on investment and growth, and a small negative impact on employment and income distribution. But at the country, sectoral,...

Número de Páginas: 48

This paper describes trends in economic growth and it's causes in several Latin American countries in the 20th century. This paper stresses that the proximate causes of economic growth are not independent of the ultimate causes of growth. Proximate causes of economic growth are those areas of causality where models and quantification is possible. Ultimate causes of economic growth are much more difficult to quantify. The paper concludes with a description of some of the most important characteristics of economic development in the region.

Economc Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean, 2003-2004

Autor: United Nations. Economic Commission For Latin America And The Caribbean

Número de Páginas: 388

This is the fifty-sixth edition in this series. It is divided into two parts. Part one deals with the performance of the region's economy and begins with an introduction that summarizes recent trends and the challenges faced by economic policy-makers. Chapters cover the international situation and the external sector, macroeconomic (fiscal, exchange-rate and monetary) policy and regional trends in the level of economic activity, inflation, employment and wages. Two additional contributions take an in-depth look at key elements of the region's economic development and are also related to its performance in the short term. The chapter on economic policy also includes a section on the sustainability of the public debt, an increasingly important issue for many countries in the region. The first part of the Survey concludes with a chapter that offers a comparative analysis of the region's economic growth from a medium-term perspective. Part two provides overviews of macroeconomic policies and trends in the Latin American and Caribbean countries in 2003 and the first half of 2004. These country reports include tables on the main economic indicators. The statistical appendix presents 25...

Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean

Autor: United Nations. Economic Commission For Latin America And The Caribbean

Número de Páginas: 0

ECLAC has been publishing the Economic Survey for 59 years now. The first edition of this report was drawn up under the Executive Secretary's supervision at the behest of the Commission, which requested that an economic survey of Latin America be prepared. That document was the new Economic Commission's first contribution to an understanding of the region's development process. The Survey thus embodies the Commission's fulfilment of one of the specific purposes for which it was created by undertaking or sponsoring the collection, evaluation and dissemination of ... economic, technological and statistical information ... on the region. In fact, the former Director of the Central Bank of Argentina, Ra︢l Prebisch, arrived in Santiago as a consultant to work on the 1948 edition of the Economic Survey. Ever since then, the Survey has served as a witness and as a leading actor in the economic development of Latin America and the Caribbean. This flagship publication of ECLAC, which Alberto Hirschman once described as the Latin American manifest is one of the most frequently quoted reports of its kind in the region. As the sixtieth anniversary of the Economic Survey for Latin America...

Número de Páginas: 226

Published since 1948, This is the sixty-eighth edition of the Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean, which corresponds to the year 2016, consists of three parts. Part I outlines the region's economic performance in 2015 and analyses trends in the first half of 2016, as well as the outlook for the rest of the year. It examines the external and internal factors influencing the region's economic performance and highlights some of the macroeconomic policy challenges that have arisen in an external context of weak growth and high levels of uncertainty. Part II analyses the challenges that the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean face at the domestic and international levels in mobilizing financing for development. On the domestic front, slower growth and tighter fiscal restrictions pose significant challenges for the mobilization of resources. Externally, the classification of many of the region's countries in the middle-income category limits their access to concessional external financing or international support. Part III of this publication contains the notes relating to the economic performance of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2015 and...

Mejor gasto para mejores vidas

Mejor gasto para mejores vidas

Autor: Alejandro Izquierdo , Carola Pessino , Guillermo Vuletin , Inter-american Development Bank
