Gene Editing in Plants

Gene Editing in Plants

Autor: Ashwani Kumar , Sudipti Arora , Shinjiro Ogita , Yuan-yeu Yau , Krishnendu Mukherjee

Número de Páginas: 871

This book is a collection of information about applying CRISPR-Cas systems for genome editing in plants. The main focus of this book is to address the recent advances and future prospects of CRISPR-Cas technology in crops. Genome editing technology is important because it can be used to improve plant traits. The earlier genome-engineering tools, zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs), and TAL effector nucleases (TALENs) are complicated to design and not flexible. The novel genome editor, CRISPR-Cas systems, has advantages over ZFNs and TALENs. The advantages are simple and easy to design precision in targeting and efficiency. Due to its precision and simplicity, the CRISPR-Cas technology has rapidly become the most popular genome-editing platform in life-science fields. CRISPR-Cas technology has been used widely for human gene therapy to treat diseases and for plant breeding programs for crop improvement. This book is of interest and useful to genome-editing professionals, plant breeders, horticulturists, field-level extension workers, nurserymen, planters, ecologists, and valuable source of reference to the relevant researchers.

Autor: Jay Prakash Verma , Catriona Macdonald , Vijai Kumar Gupta , Appa Rao Podile

Número de Páginas: 240

New and Future Developments in Microbial Biotechnology and Bioengineering: Phytomicrobiome for Sustainable Agriculture provides a comprehensive overview of the phytomicrobiome and a holistic approach for its various mechanisms, including plant growth, nutrient content, crop yield improvement, soil fertility, and health management. This book explores the genus- and species-specific endophytic microbes for developing an efficient indigenous microbial consortium for enhancing the productivity of sustainable agriculture. An essential resource for students, researchers, and scientists in the fields of biotechnology, microbiology, agronomy, and the plant protection sciences, New and Future Developments in Microbial Biotechnology and Bioengineering: Phytomicrobiome for Sustainable Agriculture highlights the plant growth-promoting activities of the phytomicrobiome and focuses on both its basic and applied aspects and the significant role they play in plant protection. - Emphasizes up-to-date research on sustainability, proteomics and genomics, and functional and molecular mechanisms of plant-microbe-soil interactions - Covers multidisciplinary features of plant microbiology, plant...

Food Safety and Toxicology

Food Safety and Toxicology

Autor: Oluwatosin Ademola Ijabadeniyi , Omotola Folake Olagunju

Número de Páginas: 536

Safety assurance of consumer goods has become a global challenge. The presence of natural and synthetic contaminants in food compromises food safety and poses a risk to public health. This book discusses biological and chemical food contaminants, predictive and detection methods of food toxicants, survival mechanism of food pathogens, legislation on microbial contaminants to prevent public health risks and strategies to mitigate contamination.

Plant Stress Physiology

Plant Stress Physiology

Autor: Akbar Hossain

Número de Páginas: 420

Due to the changing climate, food security for the increasing population has raised a great threat globally. Therefore, it is imperative to find alternate solutions for enhancing agricultural sustainability through plant stress physiology. The concept of plant stress physiology has been well-established over the past 60 years due to the increasing trends of environmental stress. Researchers have found that crop stress physiology has an association with two main areas, one is concerned with agronomy, the other concerned with plant breeding. The contents of the current book emphasize the integration of both breeding and agronomy strategies to ensure agricultural productivity and environmental safety under changing climate.

Recent Approaches in Omics for Plant Resilience to Climate Change

Recent Approaches in Omics for Plant Resilience to Climate Change

Autor: Shabir Hussain Wani

Número de Páginas: 407

This edited volume summarizes the recent advancements made in plant science including molecular biology and genome editing , particularly in the development of novel pathways tolerant to climate change-induced stresses such as drought, extreme temperatures, cold, salinity, flooding, etc. These stresses are liable for decrease in yields in many crop plants at global level. Till date conventional plant breeding approaches have resulted in significant improvement of crop plants for producing higher yields during adverse climatic conditions. However, the pace of improvement through conventional plant breeding needs to be accelerated in keeping with the growing demand of food and increasing human populationl, particularly in developing world. This book serves as a comprehensive reference material for researchers, teachers, and students involved in climate change-related abiotic stress tolerance studies in plants.
