Ecos del pasado (Saga Outlander 7)

Ecos del pasado (Saga Outlander 7)

Autor: Diana Gabaldon

Lilian Lida Bell (pen name, Mrs. Arthur Hoyt Bogue; 1867-1929) was an American novelist and travel writer. Her works included At Home with Jardines, Hope Loring, Abroad with the Jimmies, The Interference of Patricia, A Book of Girls, and The Lilian Bell Birthday Book. In addition to her novels, Bell was a travel writer. She graduated from Dearborn Seminary, Chicago. Her father, Maj. William W. Bell, served during the American Civil War, and so did her grandfather, Gen. Joseph Warren Bell, who, though a Southerner, sold and freed his slaves before the war, brought his family North, and organized the 13th Illinois Cavalry. Among the Virginian patriots at the time of the American Revolution was her great-great-grandfather, Captain Thomas Bell.

At Home with the Jardines

Autor: Lilian Bell

Número de Páginas: 114

An interesting story about the marriage of Aubrey and Faith Jardine and all the trials and tribulations of their domestic life, problems with their house, relatives, guests, their cook and other domestic staff, all narrated in an "innocent" and charming way evocative of the time period.Just a light, frothy read and you have to remember as the reader the time this was set and written in and to appreciate the morals and way of life of the day so at times though it sounds archaic in its tone and viewpoints you have to accept it just for what it is, a product of its time.Overall a great read as it gives you a glimpse into the lives and social strata of the day

In this day and generation, when everybody goes to Europe, it is difficult to discover the only person who never has been there. But I am that one, and therefore the stir it occasioned in the bosom of my amiable family when I announced that I, too, was about to join the vast majority, is not easy to imagine. But if you think that I at once became a person of importance it only goes to show that you do not know the family. My mother, to be sure, hovered around me the way she does when she thinks I am going into typhoid fever. I never have had typhoid fever, but she is always on the watch for it, and if it ever comes it will not catch her napping. She will meet it half-way. And lest it elude her watchfulness, she minutely questions every pain which assails any one of us, for fear, it may be her dreaded foe. Yet when my sister's blessed lamb baby had it before he was a year old, and after he had got well and I was not afraid he would be struck dead for my wickedness, I said to her, "Well, mamma, you must have taken solid comfort out of the first real chance you ever had at your pet fever," she said I ought to be ashamed of myself. My father began to explain international banking to...

Book Excerpt: ...n their pliability and the trustfulness of their innocent, limpid blue or brown-eyed gaze, which meets your own with such implied flattery to your superior strength and intelligence--don't you believe for one moment that the simple little dears do not know exactly the part they are playing. They are twice as clever as the cleverest of you. They feel that they are needed just as they are. The fashionable schools are turning them out every year exactly as the untrained men under thirty-five would wish them to be. They know this. Therefore they remain as art has made them. Feeling themselves admired by the class of men they most wish to attract, they have no incentive to improve. And yet, I suppose, untrained men under thirty-five have their use in the world, aside from the part they play in the discipline of discriminating young women. Girls even marry these men. Lovely girls, too. Clever girls--girls who know a hundred times more than their husbands, and are ten times finer grained. I wonder if they love th...

"Last night was date night and what a surprise I received! It kept me up late tossing in a half slumber-half conscious state for hours. Every Tuesday night I have a date with my lover, who lives 1000 miles away and has for three years now. We talk on the phone, sometimes amusing ourselves with idle chatter and other times we confess our deepest desires and greatest hopes. This last night's conversation was most exciting, but has since been equally as scary. I have not felt this uneasy since Dylan first leaned in to kiss me, five years ago. I was fifteen then, what feels like eternity ago to me.."
