We Are the Crisis of Capital

We Are the Crisis of Capital

Autor: John Holloway

Número de Páginas: 428

We Are the Crisis of Capital collects articles and excerpts written by radical academic, theorist, and activist John Holloway over a period of forty years. This collection asks, “Is there a way out?” How do we break capital, a form of social organisation that dehumanises us and threatens to annihilate us completely? How do we create a world based on the mutual recognition of human dignity? Holloway’s work answers loudly, “By screaming NO!” By thinking from our own anger and creativity. By trying to recover the “we” buried under the categories of capitalist thought. By opening those categories and discovering the antagonism they conceal and by discovering that behind the concepts of money, state, capital, crisis, and so on, there moves our resistance-and-rebellion. An approach sometimes referred to as Open Marxism, it is an attempt to rethink Marxism as daily struggle. The articles move forward, influenced by the German state derivation debates of the 1970s, by the CSE debates in Britain, and the group around the Edinburgh journal Common Sense, and then moving on to Mexico and the wonderful stimulus of the Zapatista uprising, and now the continuing whirl of discussion ...

Subcommander Marcos

Subcommander Marcos

Autor: Nick Henck

Número de Páginas: 534

Subcommander Marcos made his debut on the world stage on January 1, 1994, the day the North American Free Trade Agreement took effect. At dawn, from a town-hall balcony he announced that the Zapatista Army of National Liberation had seized several towns in the Mexican state of Chiapas in rebellion against the government; by sunset Marcos was on his way to becoming the most famous guerrilla leader since Che Guevara. Subsequently, through a succession of interviews, communiqués, and public spectacles, the Subcommander emerged as a charismatic spokesperson for the indigenous Zapatista uprising and a rallying figure in the international anti-globalization movement. In this, the first English-language biography of Subcommander Marcos, Nick Henck describes the thought, leadership, and personality of this charismatic rebel spokesperson. He traces Marcos’s development from his provincial middle-class upbringing, through his academic career and immersion in the clandestine world of armed guerrillas, to his emergence as the iconic Subcommander. Henck reflects on what motivated an urbane university professor to reject a life of comfort in Mexico City in favor of one of hardship as a...

Globalization and Postmodern Politics

Globalization and Postmodern Politics

Autor: Roger Burbach , Fiona Jeffries , William I. Robinson

Número de Páginas: 188

In this critique of globalization, Burbach (director of the Center for the Study of the Americas) asserts that institutions such as the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund, and the transnational corporations are intent upon exercising a new hegemony over our lives while the role of the traditional nation state is transformed. He builds his case by showing how a group of high-tech robber barons at the center of this power shift dominate the information age and exploit the technologies of globalization for their own narrow interests. Drawing on contemporary historical experiences, he discusses the emergence of an array of movements comprising the marginalized, the dispossessed, and those who refuse to accept the rule of the transnational elites.
