El español en su historia. Textos y contextos es un instrumento útil para un primer acercamiento a la diacronía del español, ya que ofrece una panorámica general de las dos perspectivas con las que cabe acercarse a la historia de una lengua: la llamada historia externa y la historia interna o gramática histórica. Así, siguiendo un eje cronológico, se analiza el contexto histórico en sentido amplio, es decir, las circunstancias políticas, sociales y culturales de cada época, pero también las actitudes hacia la lengua, la reflexión metalingüística o la fijación de una norma; todo ello sin olvidar la diacronía más reciente, en la que también cabe estudiar la evolución de nuestra lengua. Junto a este contexto externo, se presentan los principales datos del cambio interno que se va produciendo en el español a lo largo de los siglos en todos los niveles de análisis lingüístico (fonético-fonológico, morfosintáctico y léxico).
Sobre la historia del voseo, o el uso informal del pronombre «vos» y su morfología, se han hecho estudios con datos restringidos a cortos períodos de tiempo, lo que imposibilita el conocimiento global de su desarrollo lingüístico. La Crónica de San Juan de la Peña, conocida también en la Edad Media como Coronicas de los senyores reyes d’Aragón, fue redactada a instancias de Pedro IV el Ceremonioso en la segunda mitad del siglo XIV.
