Estudios de lexicología y metalexicografía del español actual

Estudios de lexicología y metalexicografía del español actual

Autor: Gerd Wotjak

Número de Páginas: 228

Lexiographica. Series Maior features monographs and edited volumes on the topics of lexicography and meta-lexicography. Works from the broader domain of lexicology are also included, provided they strengthen the theoretical, methodological and empirical basis of lexicography and meta-lexicography. The almost 150 books published in the series since its founding in 1984 clearly reflect the main themes and developments of the field. The publications focus on aspects of lexicography such as micro- and macrostructure, typology, history of the discipline, and application-oriented lexicographical documentation.

Donum Grammaticum

Donum Grammaticum

Autor: Hannah Rosén

Número de Páginas: 438

The articles in this volume treat issues in Hannah Rosen's many fields of scholarly interest. Most of the articles deal with subjects in Latin linguistics and philology; others treat Celtic linguistics and philology, while some combine the two. A number of the papers take Hannah Rosen's own work as their point of departure: especially, research on nominalization and periphrasis; on tense use and narrative structure; on translation technique. The authors adopt a variety of perspectives and approaches. This volume includes many contributions that are descriptive, comparative, or historical in nature, as well as some reflecting a literary orientation. A few authors use the text and its structure as their framework. A wide range of approaches to syntactical analysis on various levels of expression is prominently represented in the work of many of the contributors.

Infinitivo y sujeto en portugués y español

Infinitivo y sujeto en portugués y español

Autor: Clara Vanderschueren

Número de Páginas: 368

This volume sheds light upon one of the most emblematic constructions in Ibero-Romance: adverbial infinitives with specified subjects (e.g. al entrar Juan (Sp), para eles verem o resultado (Ptg)). The study attempts to fill an empirical gap and offers a cognitive-functional and comparative account on these constructions. The first part provides an overview of the notions of infinitive, subject and adverbial clauses. The second part consists of two empirical case studies. First, the use of the Portuguese inflected infinitive is shown to be sensitive to factors as the mental accessibility of the infinitival subject, the syntactic-semantic autonomy of the clause, the verbal nature of the infinitive and clausal status of the construction. Second, Spanish and Portuguese infinitives with overt subjects are shown to have different properties: in Portuguese they are more complex and clause-like (having more prototypical subjects and infinitives closer to the verbal prototype), while Spanish infinitives with proper subjects have a simpler structure and are more nominal in nature. More generally, this dissertation illustrates the flexible behaviour of the infinitive in different languages,...

Linguistic Borrowing in Bilingual Contexts

Linguistic Borrowing in Bilingual Contexts

Autor: Fredric W. Field

Número de Páginas: 284

A number of previous approaches to linguistic borrowing and contact phenomena in general have concluded that there are no formal boundaries whatsoever to the kinds of material that can pass from one language into another. At the same time, various hierarchies illustrate that some things are indeed more likely to be borrowed than others. Linguistic Borrowing in Bilingual Contexts addresses both, by examining claims of no absolute limits and synthesizing various hierarchies. It observes that all contact phenomena are systematic, and borrowing is no exception. Regarding forms, the determining factors lie in the nature of the morphological systems in contact and how they relate to one another. Two principles are proposed to determine the nature of the systematicity and interaction: the Principle of System Compatibility (PSC), and its corollary, the Principle of System Incompatibility (PSI). Together, these principles provide a consistent account of the possibilities and limits to borrowing.

Aspect and the Categorization of States

Aspect and the Categorization of States

Autor: David Brian Roby

Número de Páginas: 211

In this work, the Spanish copulae ser and estar are argued to be aspectual morphemes. Their binary opposition reflects the universal aspectual values ÃÃplus or minus¨Perfective¨, which are the same ones overtly expressed by the preterite and imperfect past tense forms in Spanish. It can therefore be shown that different types of states, just like different types of events, can be categorized based on their aspectual composition. Additionally, the inherent semantic differences between events and states can be accounted for by analyzing aspect as applying to events internally and to states externally. A useful resource for the beginning linguist as well as the most seasoned analyst, this work is written in language that is easy to understand while remaining faithful to all of the appropriate relevant technical terminology. Anyone who is seriously interested in exploring why the Spanish verbs ser and estar are used the way they are should read this book.

Word Classes and Related Topics in Ancient Greek

Word Classes and Related Topics in Ancient Greek

Autor: Emilio Crespo , Jesús De La Villa , Antonio R. Revuelta

Número de Páginas: 596

The book presents an up-to-dated and thorough treatment of an important part of the syntax of Ancient Greek, the Word Classes. It collects most of the papers read at the international conference held in Madrid on 18-21, June 2003 by linguists and classicists coming from a large number of European countries. Since some of the 31 published papers deal with or touch on other syntactic subjects than Word Classes, this volume can be considered as reflecting a large part of the research on Ancient Greek Syntax nowadays. It intends to be useful for classicists, historical linguists and Hellenists. The book provides three indexes (general, Greek words, Greek texts studied).
