Ethnobotany of the Mountain Regions of Mexico

Ethnobotany of the Mountain Regions of Mexico

Autor: Alejandro Casas , José Juan Blancas Vázquez

Número de Páginas: 1581

Research in recent years has increasingly shifted away from purely academic research, and into applied aspects of the discipline, including climate change research, conservation, and sustainable development. It has by now widely been recognized that “traditional” knowledge is always in flux and adapting to a quickly changing environment. Trends of globalization, especially the globalization of plant markets, have greatly influenced how plant resources are managed nowadays. While ethnobotanical studies are now available from many regions of the world, no comprehensive encyclopedic series focusing on the worlds mountain regions is available in the market. Scholars in plant sciences worldwide will be interested in this website and its dynamic content. The field (and thus the market) of ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology has grown considerably in recent years. Student interest is on the rise, attendance at professional conferences has grown steadily, and the number of professionals calling themselves ethnobotanists has increased significantly (the various societies (Society for Economic Botany, International Society of Ethnopharmacology, Society of Ethnobiology, International...

Genetic Resources of Phaseolus Beans

Genetic Resources of Phaseolus Beans

Autor: Paul Gepts

Número de Páginas: 609

The period following the second world war has witnessed an expanding commitment to incr~ased food production in tropical countries. Public and private initiatives at the national and international levels have led to the creation of programs geared specifically towards the improvement of food crops in tropical conditions. Examples of this increased commitment are the network of international agricultural research centers and numerous bilateral aid projects. As a consequence, crop improvement has become a truly worldwide endeavor, relying on an international network of institutions and collaborators. This holds also for Phaseolus beans. Following the discovery of the Americas, Phaseolus beans became distributed on all six continents. Yet, until not so long ago, most of the research on Phaseolus improvement took place in developed countries. In recognition of the nutritional importance of Phaseolus beans in developing countries, this has changed considerably in the last years, principally perhaps through the activities of the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) and the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR). Consequently, the scope of the research on...

“California’s extraordinary flora is described in contemporary detail in this handy volume, which should prove an inspiration to all of those interested in these plants, their habitats, and their importance to a state richer in botanical diversity than any other part of the United States. This is a thorough revision of an indispensable book.”—Peter H. Raven, Missouri Botanical Garden “This second edition of The Jepson Manual is a monumental achievement! Far more than a simple update, the book has gone through a thorough revision, making it a must-have book for California plant enthusiasts—professional and lay alike."—Lucinda McDade, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden “Biogeographers, vegetation ecologists, and practitioners of conservation and restoration will all welcome the second edition of the Jepson Manual. Many improvements in this second edition include major taxonomic name changes, more information on habitat/range/phenology, better keys, and new illustrations. The second edition is more user-friendly, accurate, and scientifically rigorous. And these improvements are exactly the kind of recent, authoritative, and trusted flora needed.”—Michael G. Barbour,...

The Forest of the Lacandon Maya

The Forest of the Lacandon Maya

Autor: Suzanne Cook

Número de Páginas: 402

The Forest of the Lacandon Maya: An Ethnobotanical Guide, with active links to audio-video recordings, serves as a comprehensive guide to the botanical heritage of the northern Lacandones. Numbering fewer than 300 men, women, and children, this community is the most culturally conservative of the Mayan groups. Protected by their hostile environment, over many centuries they maintain autonomy from the outside forces of church and state, while they continue to draw on the forest for spiritual inspiration and sustenance. In The Forest of the Lacandon Maya: An Ethnobotanical Guide, linguist Suzanne Cook presents a bilingual Lacandon-English ethnobotanical guide to more than 450 plants in a tripartite organization: a botanical inventory in which main entries are headed by Lacandon names followed by common English and botanical names, and which includes plant descriptions and uses; an ethnographic inventory, which expands the descriptions given in the botanical inventory, providing the socio-historical, dietary, mythological, and spiritual significance of most plants; and chapters that discuss the relevant cultural applications of the plants in more detail provide a description of the...
